Can I get a U.S. credit card in India ?
Yes—but if you live in India and have no U.S. residency, SSN/ITIN, or U.S. banking/credit history, you generally cannot simply apply online for most U.S.-issued credit cards using an Indian address.
Your main situations
- IN - Indian resident, no U.S. SSN/ITIN: Most mainstream U.S. credit-card applications will not be available to you. Chase, for example, says international students in the U.S. can apply with an SSN or ITIN.
- US - Living/studying/working in the U.S.: You may be able to obtain a U.S. credit card after establishing the required identity, address and tax/credit information.
- Existing American Express cardholder: Amex has a Global Card Relationship program that can allow eligible existing cardmembers moving between certain countries, including India and the U.S., to apply for a local card while using their existing relationship.
- ITIN: An ITIN is a U.S. tax identification number for people who aren't eligible for an SSN, but the IRS does not issue an ITIN simply because someone wants a U.S. credit card. There must generally be a qualifying federal tax purpose.
What you should NOT do
Don't use a friend's/fake U.S. address, fake SSN, or someone else's identity to obtain a U.S. credit card. The application needs accurate information and the issuer may verify your identity and address.
