The alteration of the atmosphere refers to changes in its composition, structure, or processes, often due to natural or human-induced factors. These alterations can have significant environmental and climatic impacts. Major causes of atmospheric alteration include:

1. Air Pollution: Emission of pollutants like carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄), nitrogen oxides (NOₓ), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), and particulate matter (PM) from industrial activities, transportation, and agriculture.

2. Greenhouse Gases: Increased levels of greenhouse gases (GHGs), such as CO₂, CH₄, and nitrous oxide (N₂O), contribute to global warming and climate change. These gases trap heat in the Earth's atmosphere, leading to a rise in average global temperatures.

3. Ozone Layer Depletion: The release of chemicals like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and halons can damage the ozone layer, which protects life on Earth from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

4. Deforestation and Land Use Changes: Deforestation reduces the Earth's capacity to absorb CO₂, while land use changes, such as urbanization, can alter local atmospheric conditions and contribute to the urban heat island effect.

5. Aerosols: Natural and anthropogenic aerosols (tiny particles) in the atmosphere can affect cloud formation, weather patterns, and the Earth's radiative balance.

6. Volcanic Eruptions: Volcanic activity releases large amounts of gases (e.g., sulfur dioxide) and particles into the atmosphere, which can lead to temporary cooling of the Earth's surface.

7. Climate Engineering: Proposals for geoengineering, such as injecting aerosols into the atmosphere to reflect sunlight, could alter the atmosphere with unpredictable effects.
