Books, often called our dearest friends, become our closest companions taking us on
a journey into a beautiful world of make-believe where fairies with wands fulfill our
dreams; where goblins and witches, and kings and queens in castles, do the most amazing
things, where santa clause gives little gifts to all children.

Some books are bought in bookshops and many of them are borrowed from libraries. A library
is the best place to find all sorts of books - reference books, fiction, general books,
magazines, newspapers, etc. the librarian takes care of the books and handles them with great
care.

Some books have beautiful pictures too which are pleasing to the eyes and make reading interesting.
Try to collect as many books as you can, and soon you will have a little library of your own at home
. During the summer vacations, you could join a 'lending library' in your locality where you could become
a member by paying a nominal fee each month, since books are expensive to buy. And the next time you have
to give someone a gift, remember, the greatest treasure you can give someone is a beautiful book!
 

Mohandas was born on October 2, 1869 at Porbandar in Saurashtra. As a little boy,
He was not fond of studies, but grew up, to be very clever. He went to school at 
a place known as Rajkot. Later, when he grew up, he went to England to study law,
and became a barrister. From England. he went to South Africa to practise law. He
was shocked to find how badly the white people treated the 'blacks'. He made up
his mind to stop this ill treatment, because he believed that everyone was equal.
Bapu came back to India. He worked towards making India free. He taught us the true
meaning of 'Ahimsa', that is fighting without violence. He taught us to be kind,
loving and truthful. Many young, Educated Indians followed Bapu's footsteps and
bravely gave up their lives to free India from foreign rule. Among them were Pandit
Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, Jinnah and Many other freedom Fighters.
Whenever we think of those bygone days, Bapu or Mahatma Gandhi, as he come to be known
as, will always be remembered, for he was truly a very great leader.

Visit a railway station, and you are sure to see a porter there. You can easily spot him in
a crowd as he wears a red turban and coat, and is seen carrying luggage from one platform to another.
He is a very important person at the railway station.

All porters wear a brass badge on their arms. This gives them a licence to carry luggage. If there is too
much luggage for a porter to carry, he uses a hand-cart to carry them.

The porter works very hard to make a living. He is not rich and, at times, he and his family have to face many
hardships. Since there are many porters at the railway station, they feel lucky when someone asks them to
carry their luggage. Sometimes, in spite of working for many days, they still find it difficult to make ends
meet.

There are times when some passengers do not pay the correct wages to the porter, but haggle or fight with him.
We should realise how hard his job really is, and be kind and thoughtful towards him.
So the next time you see his bright, red uniform, remember who he is, and how hard he works!
